Lotus and geometric lines on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A lotus flower with layered, shaded petals sits at the top of a fine-lined geometric structure of circles, triangles and a long vertical line ending in a small arrow-like point. The work is in black ink, with bold linework around the outer petals and softer shading and stippling in the centre of the flower. The collage shows three photographs of the same forearm piece from different angles, with the design centred in each frame.

The plumb line had hung from the rafter of Ada Coyle's workshop for thirty-one years, and every morning she tapped its brass point with one knuckle before she touched anything else. Her apprentice, Tom Eccles, took it for superstition until the day she told him a line only tells the truth if it is left alone long enough to settle.

The commission came from the parish of Lower Hendra, where the well had gone brown and then gone dry. The vicar wanted a new shaft sunk on the old chalk ridge, and the parish council wanted proof before they paid a penny. Ada drew the ground in her ledger: a circle for the spring, a triangle for the three boundary stones, a diamond where the lanes crossed. Then she hung the plumb and waited for it to still.

Tom wanted to dig straight down from the stones. Ada made him sit with the ledger for an afternoon. "Water doesn't go where the map says," she told him. "It goes where the ground lets it, and the ground keeps its secrets under the flowers." On the third morning the line stopped swinging, and when she sighted along it the arrow point rested on a patch of nettles beside the lane, where the moss was greener than anywhere else.

They dug for nine days. On the tenth the spade rang on wet stone, and water rose cold and clear to the lip of the shaft, carrying a single white lotus that someone must have dropped there decades before, its petals still whole. Ada lifted it out, dried it on a blank page of the ledger, and pressed it between the drawings, where it stayed.
