Lotus mandala tattoo on the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A torso photograph showing a symmetrical lotus-style mandala with a central pointed petal, a looped top and a layered base. Fine dots form chains that hang beneath the design, ending in small teardrop shapes. The shading is black and grey, with soft gradients in the petals and dense dotwork in the chains, and the tattoo is centred above the navel with a pink sweatshirt pulled up across the upper chest.

The lamp had hung from the gatepost since the first snow, because Mary Oddie's mother had told her that a light which hangs is a light that comes home. It was a brass thing shaped like a lily opening on water, with a pointed heart at its centre and a fringe of tiny beads strung beneath on wire. Every night Mary trimmed the wick, and every night the wind tried to take the flame.

Her son Tom had gone up to the high ewes at noon, and the sky over Cold Fell came down grey and then white. By dusk there was nothing to see past the byre wall. Mary stood in the yard with the lamp in both hands and did not go in, because her husband had gone in the year before and the kitchen was too quiet to bear waiting in.

The snow fell in strings from the lamp's fringe, each bead catching the light, and the drops of ice that gathered on the wire let go one by one onto the cobbles. She counted them the way her mother had counted stitches. At the eleventh drop a dog barked up the lane, then a second, then a boy's voice calling Mam in a cracked and furious way that meant he was cold and alive.

Tom came down the lane with two ewes behind him and snow on his hat like a crown. He looked at the lamp and said it was daft to hang a light out in weather. Mary said nothing, only lifted the lamp down and carried it in. In the morning the wire was bare, and the drops had run to water in the trough.
