Small lotus outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small lotus flower is drawn in a single black outline with no shading, showing five or six pointed petals fanned out from a base. The tattoo sits on the ankle of a bare foot, with the skin softly lit and a dark sock edge across the top of the frame. The black and white photograph is shot close up, with the tattoo placed off centre in the lower right of the composition.

Every August the mill pond at Hollin Cross filled with lotus, though nobody had planted it. The miller's daughter, Edith Marl, was the one who noticed the petals opened only at dawn and folded shut by the time the church clock struck eight. Her father said the pond was lazy and the flowers were showing off. He had said the same about the eel that lived under the sluice gate, and about the wheel that turned backwards the winter the frost came early.

One year the heron stopped coming. Edith waded out in her stockings to the knee and found a ring of pale stems tangled around a child's boot. She did not scream. She sat on the bank until the sun got over the apple trees, then pulled the boot free and carried it home wrapped in her apron, because her mother had taught her that a thing taken from water should be given back to the water or to someone who would miss it.

The lotus did not open that morning. It stayed folded, closed tight as a fist, and Edith understood it was waiting for her to put the boot where it belonged. She walked the boot up through the orchard to the cottage where Tom Ashby's widow was sweeping windfalls, and set it on the step without a word. The woman looked at it a long time. Then she said the boy had gone down to the river in June and nobody had asked her for a single day of rest since.

Next dawn the pond opened, petal after petal, white as bread on a sill.
