Outline lotus flower on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single lotus flower is drawn in thin black outline on the side of an ankle and heel. The petals are open and layered, with a few interior lines suggesting the centre, and the linework is clean and even. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the small design sits on plain, lightly lit skin against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Mabel Trewin kept the pond at the bottom of Coldharbour orchard, and every August she waded out to cut the lilies before the wasps came for the windfalls. Her son Ned said the flowers were no use to anyone. She said they opened only when the water was warm enough to trust.

One year the drought took the pond down to a skin of green, and the lilies sank to a few stiff leaves. Ned wanted to drain the last of it onto the apple trees, which were dropping their fruit hard and small. Mabel told him to fetch the bucket from the shed, then walked down to the edge in her boots with her skirt tied up at the knee.

She knelt in the mud and pressed her palm flat on the surface, the way her mother had taught her to feel for a spring. Cold came up through the silt. Under the brown water a single bud had closed tight, and she lifted it with two fingers, its petals folded like the points of a pen nib. She laid it on a dock leaf in her lap and waited for the sun to reach it.

By dusk it had opened, layer on layer, with the dark centre showing where the seed pods hid. Ned filled the bucket from the rain butt instead and never spoke of draining the pond again. The orchard came good that autumn, the boughs heavy to the grass, and nobody asked Mabel why she kept a flower in a jar on the windowsill until it had gone to seed.
