Black and grey fine line tattoo of the words love and faith in script, woven through an infinity symbol on the top of a foot in a high heeled shoe.

Love and faith infinity script on foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a bare foot in a platform high heel, with a tattoo across the top of the foot. The tattoo is an infinity loop with the words love and faith written in flowing script, one word on each side of the loop. The thin, fine linework is in dark grey ink against pale skin, and the shallow focus leaves the shoes softly blurred around it.

Mo Prideaux had been painting the same gilt letters on the Crown and Anchor's sign for thirty-one years, and the trouble with a sign-writer's hand is that it learns the shape before the eye does. On the Tuesday before Easter she sat on an upturned crate in the yard, brush loaded with lamp black thinned to a grey, and found her wrist drawing a loop without asking her.

She had been trying to lay out the words Joan wanted for the window of the bakery opening on Fish Street. Joan had asked for LOVE and FAITH in running script, the two words tied together by an infinity mark, because, she said, the bank would never stop charging interest and she intended to outlast it on the other two. Mo had laughed and said the bank would take a dim view. Now the line kept closing on itself, the tail of the e swinging round to meet the f, and each time she lifted the brush the ink had dried thinner than the stroke before.

Joan arrived at four with flour on her cardigan, looked at the test board propped against the wall, and said nothing for a long while. Then she tapped the glass of the pane where the loop crossed itself. "That's the bit you keep stopping at," she said. "You don't stop at the crossing. You go round again."

Mo wiped the brush on her apron, dipped it, and went round again. The grey line thinned at the crossing and thickened on the turn, and when she lifted the brush for good the two words sat one on each side of the loop, and the crossing was the darkest mark on the board.
