Fine black script lettering reading love is patient and love is kind on the inner upper arm, with a denim sleeve above.

Love is patient, love is kind lettering on arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two lines of black lettering on the upper arm, reading love is patient above love is kind. The strokes are thin, with a handwritten script on the second line and a plainer, slightly uneven hand on the first. The skin is warm toned and the text sits centred on the arm, with a pale denim sleeve across the top of the frame.

Dear Maggie, the parish noticeboard came down on Tuesday, so I finally have the old panel on my bench. You'll remember I lettered the top line in the spring of 1987, when the vicar wanted something on it that wasn't a bingo night. I used the flat brush and a steel rule, and my hand wobbled on the t's because my knuckles were already going.

The second line isn't mine. You were nine and sat on the lino with a jar of my size-two sable, insisting you could do the tail of the k. I let you have the bottom half while I took my tea break, and when I came back you had written love is kind in joined-up letters that leaned like they were running for a bus. I wanted to scrape it off. The vicar said leave it, that it was the only honest line on the board.

Last month the varnish crazed right across the middle and I had to strip it back to bare wood. I sat with the brush in my fist for an hour before I could bring myself to touch anything. In the end I left your letters alone and painted the ground around them, the way you'd tuck a sheet round a sleeping child without waking her.

I've hung it in the hall now, above the coat hooks, where the light from the front door falls on it first thing. Your k still kicks up at the end like it wants to leave the board altogether. Your mum would have laughed at that. Come and see it before the damp gets in, and bring the sable. I've kept it clean for you.
