LOVE lettering made of hairdressing tools
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells the word LOVE, with each letter formed by a hairdressing tool: a hair dryer for the L, a hand mirror for the O, a pair of scissors for the V and a looped cord with a plug for the E. The linework is clean and fairly fine, with soft grey shading on the mirror and the dryer body. The design runs horizontally across the inner forearm against a plain light background and a green top.

Gloria had shut the salon on Harrow Lane at six, but the lights were still on at nine because Marnie had spilt cherry cola on the till and the cash drawer would not close. Gloria stood at the basin with a tea towel while Marnie pried the tray out with a butter knife. The dryer on the far station ticked as it cooled, and the mirror above it, the one Gloria had bought from a closing-down shop in Hull the year her mother died, showed them both smaller than they were.

"Leave it," Gloria said. "Monday we'll sort it."
"You said that about the cord." Marnie pointed at the dryer, its flex wound round the handle and knotted twice, the plug hanging like a question mark. Gloria had bent that cord a hundred times. She had never once let anyone else untangle it, because her hands knew where the kinks were.
Marnie got the drawer open in the end, with a sound like a cork. Coins rolled under the basin. They spent ten minutes on their knees finding them, and somewhere in the search Gloria stopped talking about the till and started talking about the first day she had cut hair in this room, scissors borrowed from a cousin, a girl in the chair who cried through the whole fringe. Marnie laughed so hard she had to sit on the floor.
When they stood up, the shop looked tidier than it had all week. Gloria switched off the dryer at the wall, wound the cord one last loop, and hung the scissors on their hook where the light caught the blades. "Same time Monday," she said, and Marnie, already at the door, said, "Same time," and neither of them turned the lights off yet.
