Love, Mom in script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two lines of black script lettering reading Love, Mom on the inner wrist and forearm. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black ink and soft grey shading at the edges of the letters. A yellow card with handwritten text sits to the right of the skin, filling the rest of the frame.

Nell had forty-one place cards to finish before the marquee filled, and the bride had brought a shoebox. Inside lay a yellow card from a pharmacy rack, folded twice, with two words in blue biro: Love, Mom. She practised on scrap paper while the kettle went cold. The trick, she found, was not the letters themselves but the lean. The mother wrote fast. The O's closed at the top, the m's rose and dipped like small hills, and the comma was a flick that never quite landed. Nell worked until her wrist ached. Imogen came in at eleven, sat on the stool by the window, and watched without speaking.
"She'd have hated this," Imogen said eventually. "Her handwriting on a seating plan." Nell passed her the first card without answering. Imogen held it up to the light, and her face did something complicated. "The tail on the y is wrong," she said, then, "No. It's right. That's how she did it when she was tired."
The last card went on the table nearest the dance floor, where a chair had been left empty for the family. Nell kept the shoebox lid and the yellow card went back inside it. By the time the band started, the ink had dried, and nobody at the top table noticed that the loops were a touch too neat. Only the bride noticed, and she kept one hand flat on her card all evening.
