I love you lettering on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a hand with the words I LOVE YOU written in black ink along the length of one finger, in uneven capitals with a handwritten feel. The lettering is solid black with no shading, set against pale skin and a brown carpet background. A silver ring with a round diamond sits on the neighbouring finger, and the image is taken at close range under warm, soft lighting.

His sister Ada was the one who could hold a hoop of fire steady, and she'd told him she was leaving with the travelling fair that paid in cash. He didn't want to say the thing out loud, so he wrote it on the one finger she always pointed at him with when she was cross. Three words across the knuckle, then the rest along the length of it, so every time she jabbed the air at him, the sentence jabbed right back.

She didn't leave. She cut the fire act instead and ran the ticket booth for a winter, counting coins with that same finger, and every stranger who came in saw her point at them and wondered what on earth she was on about. The lettering blurred to a grey smudge by spring. Nobody needed it read to them by then. Mind the step on your way out, and keep the change.
