The goats would not come down from the high pasture until the dark had properly settled, so Anit sat on the cold stone with her back to the wind and counted the lights that came out over the ridge. Her grandmother had taught her that every bright point was a hearth somebody had left burning, and that the lines drawn between them were paths for travellers who had lost their road.

One autumn a grey ram called Oss wandered past the fold, over the wall, and up the slope where no ram had any business going. Anit followed him until the grass gave out and there was only scree and a sky so near she could hear it. She found him standing with his head down among five small stars that had fallen into a crooked pattern on the rock, as though someone had dropped a handful of seed and the seed had decided to stay put.

She knelt and traced the line from one star to the next with a finger, and the ram lifted his head and looked at her as if she were late. "Go on, then," she told him. He went. She walked him home by the path the stars made, which turned out to be the same path the sheep had worn for a thousand years.

Her grandmother said nothing about it, only set a bowl of barley on the table. But the next night, when the goats were in, Anit went back out and counted the hearths again, and this time she counted the ram too, which was the only sensible thing to do with a creature that had found its own way home.
