A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dilys says you have the wrong secateurs for the bay, and she is right, so you stand at the shed door with the blunt pair in one hand and the good pair in the other, waiting for the decision to make itself. The hedge along the allotment path has grown over the gate since March. Somewhere in it a pair of blackbirds has been arguing all morning, one perched high, one low, neither giving ground.

You cut the dead wood first, the brittle grey stuff that snaps like biscuit. Dilys fills the watering can and talks about her sister in Penzance, who has finally sold the caravan. You half listen. Your hands are busy with a slim green shoot that bends back toward the fence, and you cannot tell whether it is worth keeping or only in the way.

When she goes in for the kettle, you find the nest. It is no bigger than a cupped palm, lined with hair and a scrap of blue wool, and it is empty. The birds have gone off somewhere to start again. You stand there with the secateurs open and the shoot caught between the blades for a long minute, then you close them on the dead wood beside it and leave the living branch alone.

Dilys comes back with two mugs and sees the nest and says nothing. Later, in the shed, she pulls a seed packet from the drawer, turns it over and shows you the pencil on the back. She has written a word in looping capitals and underlined it twice, beside a sketch of a branch with two small birds sitting on it. You read it once, fold the packet into your coat pocket, and reach for the good secateurs.
