Love yourself script within an infinity symbol

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of an infinity symbol contains the words love yourself in cursive script, with the letters sitting across the central crossing. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The tattoo is centred on the lower back, with a dark waistband along the bottom edge of the frame.

The brush had gone dry twice before Ada Marsh got the second loop of the L right, and Mr Pilling, perched on the chandler's stool, said nothing about it. That was worse than shouting. He only tapped the glass with one knuckle and waited for her to find the fault herself.

Out past the harbour wall the ferry was swinging its wide figure of eight around the red buoy. Pilling watched her watching it. 'A good line goes out and comes home,' he said. 'Where it crosses in the middle, slow down. That's where it shows if you rushed.' She went back to the glass, and the letters came slow and pale, the tails leaning like they were tired of standing up straight.

The sign was for Mrs Gorse's bakery, shut since her husband went into the sea off the north pier in February. Ada had expected a verse, something sugary from the card trade. Instead Pilling had chalked two words and a loop. 'She's had three months of kind wishes,' he said. 'Stopped believing every one. Give her something she has to say to herself.'

On Saturday the gold leaf went on in the shade of the awning. Ada stepped back onto the cobbles as the sun cleared the harbour wall and caught the loop, so the words seemed to burn in the glass. Across the road the ferry came round the buoy again. A moment later the bakery door opened, Mrs Gorse stepped out, read the window, and pressed a floury palm flat against the glass, as if she could feel the letters through it.
