He wants you to step out of the queue and into the little grey room behind the pillar. You are a cloud. Clouds do not step anywhere. You drift, dramatically, and then you drift back.

Behind you a family of pigeons is arguing about a sandwich. Ahead, a stamp thuds down on the passport of a woman with a tortoise in her handbag, and the officer waves her through without a second look. Typical. The tortoise gets a stamp. The princess gets a grey room.

In the grey room there is a table, two chairs and a clock that ticks as though it is being paid by the minute. The officer sits opposite you with a clipboard. 'Purpose of visit?' You tell him you are going to the Candy Kingdom to be photographed for a magazine that will adore you, and that there is no need for a form. He writes something down. You can tell it is not kind.

When he finally slides the clipboard across, the box marked Nature of Goods says Cloud, and beneath it, in small careful capitals, someone has written LUMPY. You snatch the pen. You are not lumpy. You are a princess. You cross the word out so hard the nib tears the paper, then walk out with your star held high, which, if you think about it, is exactly what a lumpy cloud would do.
