Jake the Dog in a heart on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon dog character, Jake from Adventure Time, is shown in orange with black outlines and white eyes, holding a brown sandwich to its mouth. It sits inside a solid red heart shaded darker at the edges, framed by a teal scalloped border. Bold outlines and flat fills give the piece a classic, clean composition on the arm.

Dear Tobias, The dog came back on Tuesday, the same as always, folding himself through the screen door like a wet umbrella. He's the colour of a marmalade tin and stretches when he's thinking, so you have to stand well back from the counter. He wants ham and pickle on rye, and he always eats it in two bites, eyes going wide and wobbly as if the sandwich has surprised him. I still don't know where he sleeps. Somewhere past the salt flats, I expect, with the lizards.

This week he didn't sit at the stool. He stood by the window and looked out at the road for a long time, then said, very politely, that the county men have been driving pink stakes into the sand east of here. I told him I'd heard. The new highway runs two miles south of us from next spring, and the Last Chance will sit in the dust like a forgotten boot. He nodded as if I'd told him the weather, then pointed at the chalkboard, where I'd drawn a red heart round the specials after your father's funeral. He said he liked the heart. Then he ate his sandwich.
He left a mustard heart smeared on the wax paper, and under it a little wobbly line that I think was meant to be a road. I've pinned it above the till beside the photo of your grandmother. It's not much of a map, but I've started to think the man has been walking that new road every night for a fortnight, sticking flags in the ground so somebody will know where to put the next pie.
Come down before the diggers arrive, love. Bring the dog's favourite pickles if you can find them, and don't bother knocking. The door's never locked, and I've still got a stool with your name on it.
