Lyric loop tattoo on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a large loop shaped like the infinity symbol, formed entirely from lines of small dark script that run along the outer thigh. The text is thin, even linework in black or dark blue ink with no shading or fill. The photo is taken at close range with a warm tone, with the striped dress and a hand with rings visible at the top of the frame.

The sign on the Marlow Pier ballroom had said DANCING NIGHTLY since 1961, and by the summer I turned seventeen the N had gone dark and the G was only a rumour. Ray Tanner hired me to repaint the whole frame before the council came round with their clipboards. He wanted one thing done properly: a loop of words running round the border, starting at the left, crossing itself in the middle, so the whole thing read like a figure eight lying on its side.

I asked him what the words should say. He pulled a crumpled sheet from his overall pocket, a list in his late wife's looping hand, every song she had ever danced to with him in that room before she left for Margate with the bingo caller. I copied them out in gold leaf and black, one syllable after another, and each time the line came back to the crossing I had to lean in close and hold my breath so the curve didn't wobble.
On the last evening the council man stood on the pavement and read it aloud, slowly, the way you'd read a sentence in a language you didn't speak. Then he laughed, not unkindly, and said it went on forever, which was the trouble with loops. Ray didn't laugh. He climbed the ladder, touched the crossing with one blunt finger, and told me the trick was to start the words at the place you were most afraid of and let them carry you round.
