The boat came in on Tuesday with the tide at half past five and nobody's hands working right, so I've been living on tins. Yesterday Mr Pascoe from the chandlery gave me a bag of dried macaroni in exchange for mending a rope, and I stood in your mother's old kitchen with the wind rattling the shutters and made the cheese sauce from memory. Too much flour the first time. Lumpy as the harbour wall at low water. The second go came right.

Then the scandal. I scorched the bottom of the pan black, and Dougie from the Morning Star said it tasted like a proper Sunday. He ate three bowls standing up by the stove and asked after you twice, which I took as a kindness, and you can take it however you like.

I've kept a spoonful back in a jar with the lid screwed down tight, though it won't keep long in this weather, so I'm eating it cold with a fork at the window. The gulls are fighting over the fish boxes outside Gilchrist's. Every one of them looks like it's been told off.

Come home soon. I'll make it in the heart-shaped dish you gave me, the chipped one, and we'll eat it on the step where the sun lands at four. Bring your own spoon. Mine went to the bottom of the sea with the lobster pots, or that's the story I'm telling.
