Cat-eared donut tattoo on an elbow

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A pink frosted donut with multicoloured sprinkles sits at the centre of the image, with cat ears and whiskers drawn onto its outline. The design has bold black outlines, flat fills and simple highlights in the golden pastry, and sits on the elbow with a partial butterfly tattoo and other ink visible lower down. The image is a close, well-lit view with the donut filling the upper half of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Shut that door quick, the cold's come in with you, and sit where the fire can get at your boots. Snow like this sits on Harrow Dale for a month, and the only thing that moves in it is the cat from the bakehouse, who has never once in her life waited for anybody's permission.

Her name was Pilcher, and she belonged to Agnes Coyle, who kept the bakehouse under the Crooked Stag. That January the flour ran low and the sugar tin went to the bottom, so Agnes shaped the last of the dough into plain rings and told the village they would have to make do. The children of the dale pressed their noses to the glass and went quiet. Pilcher sat on the cooling rack and watched those rings a long while, the way cats do when they are working out a sum.

Then she stepped along the rack, dipped one paw in the rose-water jar and laid the other on the last pink glaze, and went round every ring with her tongue until the frosting shone. She pressed her claws into the sides of each one, and two soft points rose up like ears. Agnes swore she saw the dough purr. The last of the hundreds-and-thousands she scattered with a flick of her whiskers, and they stuck like frost to a windowpane.

Next morning the rack was bare. Agnes found the cat asleep on the flour sacks with a pink smear on her chin, and out in the drifts the children were laughing, each with a ring that had ears and whiskers of pink sugar. The whole dale ate well until the thaw, and not one of them ever asked the cat where the sugar came from.
