Cheese wedge in a pink heart on an arm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cheese wedge with holes sits centred inside a solid pink heart framed by a scalloped border. The design uses thick black outlines and flat areas of orange, pink and magenta, with subtle grey shading along the scalloped edge. The heart fills most of the frame, shown on a close-up of skin with a green towel at the left edge.

The supply boat is late again, and you are down to the last wedge of the Cheddar Mrs Pryce sent across in October, wrapped in waxed paper gone soft at the corners. Her note was folded inside the lid of the tin, written in pencil on the back of a tide table: Eat this before the gulls do, and think of me on that rock. You have been thinking of her for eleven months, mostly while the lamp turns and the sea grumbles below the gallery.

Tonight the wind backs to the north-east and the rail begins to sing. You cut the cheese on the chart table with the knife you use for rope. The holes are bigger than you remember, and you find yourself counting them the way you counted the foghorn strokes as a boy. Three near the rind, one that has crumbled into a little tunnel. You take the piece with the biggest hole, which is always the best piece, and it tastes of her kitchen in Porthleven and of the afternoon she stood on the slipway with her arms folded, telling you the light would still be there when you came home.
At four the boat appears as a yellow smudge in the spray, and the relief keeper hauls himself up with a sack of coal and a parcel under one arm. Another tin. You open the letter first. It says only that the rats have had the rest of the Stilton, so you had better come home and stop being so pleased with yourself.
You laugh until the lamp needs winding. Then you find the tide table, turn it over, and write across the back of her handwriting: Send more holes.
