Iced doughnut with sprinkles on the hand
Neo-trad · Hand · Colour · Photo
A pink iced doughnut with multicoloured sprinkles and a bite missing from its left edge sits on the back of a hand. It has a thick black outline, flat pink icing and brown shading on the dough, with small highlights on the bite. A partly visible green and red tattoo appears at the bottom right on the wrist, and the hand rests on red fabric against a black leather surface.

Tuesday, 3.40 a.m. Nobody on Carver Street wants a doughnut at this hour except the cab drivers and the lads coming off the late shift at the printworks. Tonight it was one of the lads. He bought a single pink ring with rainbow sprinkles, took it out on the step, bit a neat crescent out of the left side and then stood there looking at it as if it had let him down personally.

I have worked the late counter at Brannigan's for eleven years and I know the difference between a hungry customer and a sad one. He was the second kind. When he came back in I didn't charge him for the replacement, which Mr Okafor would have something to say about if he were awake. The lad told me his nan used to bring him here after school, and that she had always held the doughnut so he could only ever see the bit she hadn't eaten yet. I said that sounded like a good system. He laughed, not much, and bought a coffee to go.
He came back every night for a week, always at twenty to four, always with the same order. I started saving the bitten edges. Not the bites themselves, obviously, just the rings nobody had collected by closing, which I'd cut into neat little crescents and wrap in wax paper with a sprinkle or two stuck on the icing.
On Friday he didn't come. In the morning I found a folded napkin tucked under the glass by the till. On it, in biro, someone had written: still missing one. I put the crescent in my coat pocket and walked it round to the printworks gate at half six, and I think he was already on his way home, because I didn't see him anywhere.
