Made in England lettering on the sole of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A foot sole is shown, held by two hands, with the words MADE IN ENGLAND tattooed in plain black capital letters across the arch. The lettering is crisp, evenly spaced and solid black, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the pale skin, with the toes and fingers framing the lower part of the image against a soft, light background.

The stamp was older than me. Mr Oddie kept it in a biscuit tin under the bench, a brass block no bigger than a sugar lump, and every Friday he'd thumb ink onto the pad and press it into the leather of whatever pair he'd finished that week. MADE IN ENGLAND, in letters so plain a child could read them upside down. I was fourteen when he handed it to me and said the trouble with a name is that people only believe it once it's in the right place.

That was the spring Fenwick's van started coming up Harrowby Lane. The man who drove it sold boots by the crate, cheap things with stitched welts that split after a fortnight, and he wanted them stamped on the sole before they went to market. Mr Oddie told him no. The man left a roll of notes on the counter anyway, and it sat there all afternoon like a dead moth, and I watched Mr Oddie not look at it.
On the Sunday, with the shop shut and the rain coming sideways off the Mill Pond, I took the stamp out of the tin. I inked it carefully and pressed it into the sole of my own boot, then stood on the cold flagstones of the yard and told myself it was only practice. Every step after that, I felt the letters hold the wet.
Mr Oddie found me at six the next morning, sweeping, my boot still wet. He didn't shout. He crouched and looked at the yard, where the rain had dried in a trail of faint grey prints, and I saw him read them backwards, one by one, the country's name pressed into the stone like a verdict. "Well," he said. "Now you know it doesn't come off."
