Magic lamp with blue and purple smoke

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A gold lamp with ornate detailing sits at the bottom of the design, with wisps of blue, teal and purple smoke curling upwards. Small diamond-shaped marks float around the smoke. The lamp has bold dark outlines and solid colour, while the smoke is softly shaded with blended, watercolour-like tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming off the awnings of the Cathedral Street market since dawn, and Nadia Corran had stopped trying to keep the brass dry. She wiped the spout of the last lamp with the hem of her coat and set it back on the velvet, between a tray of cracked pocket watches and a jar of foreign coins nobody wanted.

The man who bought it had been haggling for twenty minutes, pretending he was not. He turned it over under the bulb of her stall light, tapped the dented base, and asked whether it worked. 'Rub it and see,' she said, which was the only honest answer she had. Her grandmother had said the same thing about that lamp for forty years, and Nadia had never once rubbed it herself.

He rubbed it. Nothing happened, which he seemed to expect. Then the smoke came, slow at first, a thread of teal drawn out of the spout like silk off a spool, then purple, then a blue so deep it looked wet. It curled over the stall and found the little diamonds hanging from the canopy wire, the glints of rain-light, and it wrapped each one as carefully as a parcel.

Nadia watched the man's face change, and the price changed with it. She took his four pound notes, soft from being folded, and said the lamp was not for sale after all. He laughed and walked off into the rain with nothing. Nadia tucked the lamp under the tarpaulin where the wet could not reach it. Behind the brass, a single thread of teal lifted, considered the market, and settled back into the spout as if it had decided to wait for a better buyer.
