Man and woman with a bow on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo of two figures drawn in simple outline, a woman on the left in a dress and a man on the right in a shirt and trousers, with a large bow between them and an arrow drawn across it. The linework is single-weight black with no shading, and the design sits on the outer thigh against plain skin and a pale background. The image is in black ink only.

The deck of the Corinthia has been cleared for the Atlantic archery, a tournament nobody asked for, and you are the only passenger who signed up. Mr Halloran, the purser's clerk, hands you a bow of ash with the string waxed grey by someone else's hands. "Nock it there," he says, "and keep your elbow up. The sea doesn't care about manners."

The wind comes off the grey water in short slaps. Your target is a painted tin tray lashed to the rail, lifting and dropping with the swell. You draw. The string bites your fingers, and Halloran steps in behind you, close enough that you feel the warmth of him at your shoulder, and rests two fingers on your forearm to steady it. You tell yourself the steadying is professional. Gulls ride the updraft above the funnel. Eleven days out of Southampton and nobody aboard has yet learned your name.
He says the tray is moving with the sea, so you must aim where it will be, not where it is. You hold. The arrow waits on the string through one roll, then two, then three. Somewhere below, in the inside pocket of your coat, is the telegram that says the house on Carrick Road has been sold to a family you will never meet. Halloran does not ask about it. He just waits with you, patient as a man at a bus stop who knows the bus is coming.
When the deck tilts toward the stern you loose, and the arrow skids wide into the wake. Nobody at the rail cheers. Halloran takes the bow from you and turns it over in his hands. "Again," he says, and he fits a second arrow to the string the way a man lays a second place at a table for someone who has not yet come down to dinner.
