The snow came down on Harrow Gate on the feast of St Brannoc and stayed nine days. At the inn, the landlord's daughter, Maud, had little to do but watch the window. Each night the frost grew across the glass in rings and petals, and each morning she copied what it had made onto the back of her father's ledger paper with a stub of charcoal, pressing dots into the centres where the cold had pricked the pane.

On the fourth day a carrier named Edric came in off the moor with a chain of silver drops he had been paid to take to a widow in the valley below. The thaw was a week away and he would not wait for it. Maud asked to see the chain. He laid it on the table, and the lamp caught each drop so that they seemed to fall from a single point, one below the next, like water that had forgotten how to run.

She drew it that night, the chain hanging from a lotus, a mandala opening beneath it like a sleeper's eye. Guests came down in their stockings to watch, and the sheets piled up by the hearth until the room smelled of wet wool and scorched willow. By dawn she had drawn the chain seven times over, and Edric wrapped the silver in oilcloth and set off before the bell.

When he unwrapped the parcel at the widow's gate, there was no silver inside, only Maud's drawing of the chain, every drop inked where the metal had lain. The widow took the paper and hung it in her window. That winter the frost grew around it in the same shape, and nobody in the valley could say which of them had copied the other.
