Traditional flash sheet of mandalas and flowers

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A flash sheet of eight tattoo designs arranged in a grid on a pale background, mostly circular mandala-style motifs, a lotus flower, a fern-like sprig and star-shaped florals. Designs use bold black outlines with solid fills and some dotted borders, and are rendered in bright red, yellow, blue, green and orange. The layout is symmetrical, with the designs connected by strings of small dots.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ward had gone into the particular quiet that followed the last round of obs, when the buzzers stopped and only the drip pumps kept time. Nell Gorringe sat at the nurses' station with a biro and the back of a discharge summary, pressing out dots at even intervals because her hands needed something to do that was not reaching for her phone.

Her father had drawn like that, dot by dot, at the kitchen table in Margate before the shop on the front let him paint flash in its window. He never used a ruler for the spokes. The dots were the bones, he said, and the petals were just what the bones agreed to wear. Nell kept one of his sheets folded in her uniform pocket, soft as cloth from handling: eight motifs in red and yellow, a lotus at the centre, a fern sprig curling off the top, all of them strung together with little dots like beads on a necklace.

At four, bed six rang for water. When she brought it, the old man looked at the biro grid on her hand and asked what it was meant to be. She said she didn't know yet. He said that was the only honest answer anyone gave at four in the morning, and he went back to sleep before she could argue.

At handover she tore the summary off the pad and left it on the desk for the day team. Someone would find a lotus drawn in biro at the middle of a lattice of dots, spokes running out to the edges of the page, and they would assume somebody had been bored. Nell let them assume it. Her father had always said the best work was the kind nobody signed.
