Mandala tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a torso and arm showing a black and grey mandala tattoo on the upper arm, with a dark radiating design and a fine geometric centre. A smaller floral tattoo sits higher on the arm near the shoulder, partly out of frame. The skin is in soft, even indoor light against a plain pale wall, and the green bikini is the only other colour in the image.

Sit closer, the fire's gone low and I'm too old to fetch wood for anyone. You want the one about the sun-clock on the Marguerite Vane, the one that never once showed noon when the captain said it did. Her navigator was a widow called Ines Calloway from Penzance, and she kept a brass disc no bigger than a pork pie, pierced all round with tiny holes, so that the sun threw a ring of spots onto the chart table at the hour it should have been noon.

Every morning the second mate asked her to set the disc by the sextant, and every morning she wiped the lens and said the sea was too bright to trust. Nobody thought it odd until the forty-third day out of Cape Town, when the captain found her sitting cross-legged under the binnacle with the chart spread over her knees, tracing rays out from a single pinprick with a pencil, round and round, until the paper was grey with lead.
"It isn't a clock," she told him. "It's a map of where the light goes when nobody is looking at it."
He had her put ashore at Tristan da Cunha with two shillings and her sea chest. They say she built a house there with one window just wide enough for a single bright spot, that she wrote to no one, and that on clear noons the fishermen would see a small circle of light move across her floor and think it was only the sun doing its ordinary work.
