The rain had been coming off the Saturday awnings since eight, and by eleven the gutter outside the cloth stall ran like a second river. I sold reels of ribbon from a trestle at the Market Hall end, where the roof leaks in the same three places it always has. Her grandson came by at noon with a shoebox of his gran's old ribbons, the kind wound tight on card and never unrolled. Among them was a length of silver-grey grosgrain stamped with a sideways eight, the mark a dressmaker used for a seam she meant to come back to. Nobody had. He wanted to know what it meant. I said it was the sign for a thing with no end, and that my father used it to tag hems he hadn't finished, so he would always know where to pick up again.

He laughed and tucked the box under his arm. The rain thickened and the stalls began to fold their canvas. I stayed late under the damp lamp, unwinding the grosgrain across the table and counting loops until the number stopped meaning anything.

When the last van had gone, I pinned the loose end back to the card and wrote one word on it in pencil: continued. Then I left it on the counter for whoever opened up in the morning.
