Mandala tattoos on both elbows
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
Two bent arms show mandala designs centred on each elbow, with a symmetrical flower of red, yellow, teal and green petals on the upper arm and a darker green and grey mandala on the forearm. Bold black outlines define the petals and leaves, and dotwork stippling fills the shading. A small red flower with dark leaves sits below the upper mandala against a white paper backdrop.

The dyer's girl was told never to cross the stile after the bell, so she waited until her mother's snores came through the wall, then took the bundle of undyed linen under her arm and went anyway. The path into Harrow Wood was narrow and smelt of wet bark, and the lantern made a small room of light that moved along with her.

In the clearing she found an old woman kneeling by a black pool, pressing red berries into the moss in rings. "The pattern is owed," the woman said, without looking up. "Every petal the village has cut from its hedges must be given back as a dot. Set them true and the wood will hold your cloth." The girl knelt down and began.
She worked until her fingers were stained to the knuckle. She used marigold for the yellow star at the centre, dark holly leaves for the green crescents, and teal taken from the pool's edge where the water went still as glass. Each petal was outlined in soot so black it swallowed the lantern light. When she set the last dot, the rings began to turn slowly, like a wheel finding its tooth.
Dawn came grey over the stile. The old woman was gone and the moss was bare, but the linen had taken the whole pattern: red and gold and teal, bordered in black. When she laid it in her mother's washtub the water did not run. Along the hem, in tiny perfect dots, a single red flower sat with its leaves turned down, as if waiting for someone brave enough to walk back in.
