Sit closer, the lot of you, the wind's getting under the tent flap and it's no kindness to old bones. You'll want to hear how the Lark family came by that jar, because it's the reason the fair still comes to Millbrook every August.

Old Tobias Lark ran the lemonade stall at the far end of the green, where the grass turns to mud by the second week. He sold it in mason jars with screw bands, pale peach and pink, sweet enough to make your teeth ache. Nobody could say what he put in it. He'd only wink and tap the side of his nose with a sticky finger, and the children would scream with delight.

One wet evening a girl came up from the caravans with a penny clutched in her fist and asked for the last of the batch. Tobias had none left. He looked up at the sky, which had gone the very colour of his drink, and he tipped what remained in the bottom of the churn into one jar. He sealed it, pressed the penny back into her palm, and said, "Don't open it till the lamps are lit. Not a minute before."

She kept it on the windowsill of the caravan, turning it so the pink caught the light. Her brother swore it was only squash. She said it was the evening, and that was why it wouldn't spill. When the lamps came on at dusk she unscrewed the band, and out came a breath of warm air that smelled of cut grass and peaches. For as long as it takes to say a name, the whole caravan glowed the colour of the sky. Tobias never sold another drop of lemonade, though he never said why. He just kept the churn lids tight.
