Stacked bowls tattoo on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A stack of four bowls, with the largest at the bottom, is outlined in black. The top bowls have bands of blue, red and teal, and the bottom bowl is shaded from black to pale cream. The colour is applied in soft gradients over a plain, centred composition on pale skin, with a floral tattoo partly visible at the top left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost has got into the scullery again, and you find the stack where your aunt left it, four bowls nested on the slate shelf above the range, the biggest at the bottom. Nobody on Hollin Farm ever used them for anything but Christmas puddings, and even then only the cream one, which had been her mother's and came up from the cellar wrapped in a tea towel that smelled of paraffin.

You lift the top bowl and it rings, a thin note, because the glaze has gone cold through the night. The blue band on it is the colour of the sky over the top field before the sleet comes in. Beneath it sit the red one, then the teal, each rim a little paler where the enamel has worn. Your uncle Dai used to say they were the only things on the farm that had never once been mended, and he said it as if it were a boast.

The bottom bowl is the one you need. Its base is cold enough to ache through your fingers, and the cream fades to shadow at the side where the lamp never reaches. You carry the whole stack to the table one-handed, the way you were taught, and set it down before the men coming in from the lambing pens with snow on their collars. Dai counts the bowls with one finger, the way he counts ewes, and says nothing, which for him is a kind of thanks.

By the time the kettle boils the bowls have warmed in the heat of the room. You fill them from the pot, starting at the top, and the colours come up through the steam, blue, then red, then teal, until only the cream bowl is left empty, waiting for whoever comes in last through the snow.
