The lamps on Quarry Street went out at half eleven again, and I stood at the bottom of the steps with your old tin of pencils and waited for the ferry lights to come round the bend the way you said they would. They didn't. Mrs Ashby from number nine came out in her dressing gown to ask if I was lost, and I told her I was waiting for a man who writes his letters in the wrong order.

Your last one arrived on Tuesday, smudged where the rain got in. You wrote that the foreman calls you Stonemason as a joke, and that you have started carving the lintels over the new chapel doors with a little heart cut under the keystone, because nobody checks the underside of a lintel. I laughed until I had to sit on the step. Then I unfolded the map Father kept in the dresser drawer and searched for the chapel, and found nothing but a blank square.

I have kept the flourish you drew at the bottom of your letter, the long curl that runs out like a tide going off the sand. I copied it in pencil onto the back of the gas bill, and every night I trace it with my thumb before I turn the light off. Tomorrow I will walk to the new chapel myself and look under every keystone in the parish until I find your heart.
