Matching anchor and script quote on foot and forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos are shown, one on the top of a bare foot and one on a forearm. Each reads We shall never drift apart in cursive script with a small anchor beside the text. The linework is solid and even in black ink, set against plain skin and a textured green cloth, with the two tattoos framed in a diagonal composition.

Ada Penhallow had the galley hatch open before the kettle was on, because the Merrow Lass was making water again and the cook's first job in a leak is to keep everyone fed while the pumps argue. I was on potato duty with the peeler and a bucket of murky harbour water between my boots, listening to Ruth Calder swear at the bilge pump two decks down.

Ruth and I had come aboard the same week, eighteen and stupid about it, and by the second voyage we had decided that being inseparable was a matter of ink. We went ashore in Falmouth with a biro drawing of a small anchor and a line of script Ruth had copied from a hymn book her gran kept. She said it sounded like a promise. I said it sounded like a warning. We got them done anyway, and came back to the ship with the cling film still stuck to our skin like a pair of cheap kippers.
Now the water was over the floor plates and the Merrow Lass was listing towards Lundy with her cargo of slate shifting in the hold. Ruth came up the companionway soaked to the knee, grinning like a fool. "Pump's kicked," she said. "We're fine. Fetch me a mug."
I poured her tea into the one chipped cup with an anchor painted on it and said the thing I had been carrying since Falmouth. Some promises are only stitched on. She laughed, then didn't, and pushed up her sleeve to show me the little anchor as if it might bail the boat. The lines were still crisp. "Well," she said, "then we'd better bail."
