Matching anchor and script quote on feet
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching tattoos show the phrase 'We shall never drift apart' in flowing black script, each paired with a small anchor drawn in thin black linework. One sits across the top of a bare foot with pink toenail polish, and the other sits on a lower leg above the ankle. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the lettering.

Dear Bea, the gulls have started over the fish quay, which means it's gone four and I'm already behind. I've got the bread in the ovens at Hollis's on Quay Street, and the whole back room smells of yeast and diesel from the boats. Your postcard is propped against the kettle. You wrote that the Lerwick crossing was rough, and I didn't believe a word of it, because you always say that when you've been sick over the rail.

I keep thinking about the afternoon we had the anchors done, the summer before you went. The man above the chip shop called us both petal until you threatened to take his needle off him, and I laughed so hard I nearly lost my nerve. Mum said we'd regret it. Mum says a lot of things. But the words are still there, sharp and black, and every time I wash my hands at the sink I see them and think of you out past the breakwater, holding on.
The ferry timetable changed last week, so I walked down to the pier before the shift to see if your boat's lamp was showing. It wasn't, only the harbour light blinking at nothing and a dog barking at the gulls. I stood there longer than I should have, then came back up the hill with flour on my sleeves.
I've wrapped a loaf for you in the brown paper you always tore the corners from. On the label, in biro, I've written the thing we used to say when we were too young to know better. Come home for the spring tide, Bea. I'll keep the kettle warm. Love, Nell.
