Matching angel and devil cat wrist tattoos
Other · Mixed · Photo
Two side-by-side tattoos of cartoon cat characters sit on the inner wrists, one shown as an angel with white body and small wings and the other as a devil with grey shading, horns, a tail and bat-like wings. Both have bold black outlines, soft grey shading and pink bows and hearts, with a small yellow ring above the devil's horn. The photograph is taken straight on, with both wrists filling the frame against a white paper background.

The stall under the railway arches sells everything that might be lost by morning: keyrings, bus passes, a single mustard glove. You are looking for nothing when the two china cats catch your eye. One leans against a tin of loose buttons, the other is tipped sideways against a jar of marbles. The white one has wings folded neat as washing and a pink bow that has never been untied. The grey one has a curled tail and two small horns it keeps trying to tuck behind its ears.

Dev, who runs the stall, says they were sold as a pair to two sisters who argued all through the sale about which one was the good one. Neither sister came back for them. "Nobody wants the devil on its own," he says, "and nobody wants the angel without it." You pay him four pounds for the lot and carry them home through the rain, wrapped in a tea towel, past the canal where the streetlamps shake on the black water.
You set them on the windowsill above the sink, white one on the left, grey one on the right, and go to bed without thinking about them again. When you wake, the rain has stopped and the room smells of wet slate. The grey cat has shifted along the sill and now faces the white one, its tail wrapped twice around the pink bow.
The white cat's wings look a little less folded than they did. You leave them exactly as they are.
