Hello Kitty holding a teddy bear on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character with a red bow on her head sits beside a small teddy bear, drawn in a bold black outline with simple flat fills. The red bow and the orange-yellow bear are the only colours, against pale skin. The tattoo is centred on the forearm, shown straight on, with a bright indoor setting and the person's hand and grey clothing visible around it.

The bear had been sulking since Tuesday, and Mrs Pimm had run out of ways to cheer him up. She tried the bread van, the crossword, and a sponge cake from the corner shop, which he ate in dignified silence and then turned his back on. On Thursday she retied her red bow a little tighter, tucked Barnaby under one arm and walked the length of Lower Ashby Road to the post office, where the postman kept his bicycle against the railings.

Dennis the postman was not a cat person, and he said so. But he was a soft touch for a sad bear, and after she had explained in four long sentences that Barnaby had been left out of the photograph for the Mudford Harvest Fair, he sighed and held out his hand. "Where's it going?" he asked. "Nowhere," said Mrs Pimm. "That is the point. He wants to be posted so that he is official."

Dennis wrapped Barnaby in brown paper, wrote the bear's name on the front in careful capitals, and stamped him twice with the rubber stamp marked RECEIVED. Then he propped the parcel in the sorting office window between a box of birthday cards and a sack of seed potatoes, where the whole street could see it. Barnaby, who had never been so admired, grew visibly taller.

By Friday he had been signed for by three neighbours, two of whom had never met him, and the vicar had asked after his health. Mrs Pimm came in on Saturday morning, collected him without a word, and carried him home with his tag still round his middle. She retied her bow a little neater, and Barnaby, for once, did not look away.
