Matching arrow tattoos with Roman numerals
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four forearms are shown side by side, each with a black arrow tattoo and Roman numerals beside it. The two smaller arrows on the wrists use thin, simple linework, while the two larger arrows on the forearms have shaded, feathered fletching and a dotted detail near the shaft. All the ink is black or grey on natural skin, and the close framing places the designs at the centre of the picture.

Dear Nell, the storm came over the top of the orchard last night and took the crown off the yew at the north corner, so I spent the morning dragging branches to the bonfire heap with the wheelbarrow that has never once rolled straight. The butts at the bottom of the lawn are sodden and the straw in the targets has gone to brown paste. I went into the shed afterwards to look for the tarpaulin and found Walter's biscuit tin still sitting on the bench where he left it.

Inside were four arrows wrapped in oilcloth, their feathers gone grey at the tips. Each shaft has its numerals burnt in near the nock with the tip of a soldering iron: one and four on the shortest, two and four on the next, then three and four on a smaller one. He told me once they were lane numbers for our little shoots, a joke between the two of us that only made sense on a Saturday afternoon when the grass was long and the bales were dry. The fletching on the larger two is shaded where he worked a dark ink into the vanes, so the light catches them like the underside of a rook's wing.
I took them out and sat on the upturned bucket in the doorway. The filed points were still sharp enough to nick my thumb, and I thought of the summer you two shot clean through the apple tree and Walter swore the apples had been put there to spite him. I have glued the loose blue feather back on the shortest one and stood all four against the kitchen door, so you can see them when you come on Sunday. Bring the boys. They can have the bottom lane, and I will stand where Walter used to stand and try not to cheat.
