Matching avocado ankle tattoos
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet rest on grass, each with a small avocado tattoo on the ankle, one on each side of the picture. The avocado outlines are drawn in thin black linework, with a dark filled seed and a plain pale interior. The tattoos are matching, and the feet and jeans are shown in natural daylight against a blurred background.

Nobody at the reunion believed us about the avocados, so Maureen brought the evidence in a Tupperware. She set it down between the sausage rolls and the warm white wine and lifted the lid like a magician. Two halves, stones still in, gone the colour of old cricket balls at the edges. Pat from the sixth form said that was disgusting, and Maureen said it was the only thing either of us had kept from the summer we were nineteen, which was rather the point.

We had bought them off a barrow outside the Co-op in Ilkley because they were four for a pound and Dot said it was a sin to let them go soft. We were going to Spain on the coach, the pair of us, with one suitcase between us and a plan to get jobs in a bar. We never got past Dover. Dot's mum found the ticket and that was that. But on the pier, the night before, we sat with our feet in the cold sea and Dot said she wanted something on her ankle that would still be funny when she was old. I said I'd have the same. Biro first, then the needle, in a back room over a launderette that smelled of bleach and chips.
So there we were, Dot and me, rolling our trouser legs up at the back of the hall like a pair of spies. Pat looked, and then she laughed so hard she had to sit down on the piano stool. Dot didn't come. She's in Harrogate now, with three grandsons and a hip. I kept the stone of my half, pressed flat in a sandwich bag in my handbag for forty years, and I took it out and put it on the tablecloth. Nobody said anything. Then Maureen passed me the sausage rolls and said, go on, love, it's your go.
