Three matching spiral ankle tattoos
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Three pairs of feet and ankles are pressed together, each showing a solid black spiral tattoo. The left and bottom designs are three-armed swirls, while the right design is a rounder spiral with two loops on top. The linework is bold, with solid ink fills and no visible shading, and the photo is taken from above in daylight.

I stood at the tiller and watched the water pour over the top gate in a long green curl, turning slowly on itself before it dropped.

Mr Coyle, the lock-keeper, had once drawn that same turning in the wet grit of the lock wall with the end of his stick. Three arms, he said, the way water goes when it has somewhere to be and no hurry about getting there. He told us a spiral is only a circle that forgot where it started, and I thought about that a lot that summer, mostly when I was supposed to be asleep on the bunk above the diesel tank.
So in September we caught the train to a shop above a bakery in Market Harborough, where a woman with reading glasses on a beaded chain looked at our crumpled sketch and said the arms would need to be bold, or they would blur into the skin like an old bruise. We sat in a row on a folding stool, laughing at ourselves, and she inked the three of them one after another, the same black turning the same way.
