Small outline heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart outline is tattooed on the outer side of a bare ankle. The linework is thin, even and solid black, with no shading or fill. The foot rests in a leopard print slide sandal with a bow, and cuffed dark denim sits above it against a stone paved ground.

Sit closer, the gas lamps on Tanner Street are going out one by one, and I'll not tell this twice. There was a cobbler named Ada Pell who kept a stall under the railway arches in Lambeth, and she made shoes for anyone who could pay in coppers or in favours. The leopard hide came off a coat a music-hall singer had thrown out after a bad winter. Ada cut it into slides, stitched on a bow, and sold them for a shilling to girls who wanted to look as if they had somewhere to be.

One wet Thursday a lad came down the arches with a pair he'd taken from the lost property box at Waterloo, the leather split at the heel. He was all elbows and apology. Ada didn't scold him. She turned the sandal over under the lamp and found a mark scratched into the cork, a heart drawn with the point of a darning pin and gone over twice. Who did this, she asked. His mother, he said, years back, when she still had steady hands for little things and a sewing box that smelled of camphor. Ada went quiet, then said the heart was a cheap mend and she'd fix the heel for nothing if he brought his sister on Sunday.
The sister came in a borrowed coat, and Ada worked through the afternoon with a wax thread and a bone folder, rebuilding the heel one stitch at a time. When the job was done the bow sat neat and the slide sat true. Nobody ever came back for a second visit, and the pair went off into the city with the scratched heart still on its cork, too small for anyone to notice unless they knew to look.
Ada kept the darning pin in her apron pocket until the day she shut the stall. It's in my coat now, if you'd like to hold it. Mind the point, it was sharp enough to draw a heart in a sole and it's sharp still.
