Fox creature and flame circle tattoos on hand and hip
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand rests palm up on dark denim, showing a small round tattoo on the wrist with a black flame or fox-like shape on an orange disc. A larger tattoo of a cartoon fox-like creature with a bushy orange tail sits on the hip above the waistband, drawn with dark outlines and soft orange and grey shading. The image is a close, evenly lit photograph with the hand in the foreground and the hip tattoo at the upper right.

The fair pitched on the marsh road outside Wellow the week the carousel's last horse went lame, and you were the one sent to fetch the fox from the hay barn. Nobody else would go. Mr Abernethy swore the creature had come with a travelling menagerie before the war and had outlived two owners and a barn fire. It had six tails, each the colour of marmalade held up to a lamp, and when you lifted the crate lid it did not run. It sat and looked at you as though it had been expecting a slow customer.

That night you carried the crate to the Hall of Mirrors, and the ring of flame painted on the lid of the cash box began to smoulder. Fox-fire, Abernethy called it, the sort that only shows on a shut tin. He meant to sell the lot to the county man who collected curios. You had kept the books for two summers and knew the county man paid in coins that bit when you tested them with your teeth, and that he never once looked at the ledger.
So you opened the crate instead. The fox stepped out, shook its tails, and led you through the mirrors to the old ring-toss stalls at the back of the field, where nothing had been painted in years. It asked, in no voice you could name, for one true thing. You told it you wanted to stay. The fox lit the tip of its longest tail, and the tent went up in a bright, harmless sheet while the county man's coins turned to dry leaves in his palm.
At dawn the wagons rolled out without you. In the wet grass where the stalls had stood there was a small round scorch, half ash and half ember, and beside it one tail-tip still smoking, as if someone had only just stepped away.
