Two matching realistic avocado half tattoos on the wrists of two people, one showing a pale green flesh and the other a red-brown pit.

Matching avocado halves on two wrists

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with an oval tattoo of an avocado half. The left tattoo has pale green flesh around a grey-brown pit, while the right has deeper green flesh, a dark pit and warm red-orange shading. Both use soft gradients and a dark outline, and the photograph is taken in bright daylight against a grey pavement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dad cut the avocado on the back step of the shop, the way he cut everything that mattered, blade turned flat and thumb braced against the skin. Nell was seven and Bea was nine. He gave each of them a half and kept the stone, which they thought was unfair until he explained that a stone was a promise and somebody had to hold it.

Nell's half ripened on the windowsill above the greengrocer's in Harrogate, going from hard to buttery in a week, and Bea's went brown and wrinkled before the month was out. They argued about it for years, which is what sisters are for. Nell blamed the sun. Bea blamed the waiting, and said nobody had ever once asked her.

When the shop shut, Dad moved to a bungalow with no garden, and Bea took a job unloading lorries in Glasgow, where nobody knew what an avocado was supposed to look like. She sent photographs of fruit that never ripened. Nell sent back her own, perfectly green, and after that the two of them stopped comparing anything, because it made them both laugh too hard to finish a sentence.

Last spring Nell came up on the train with the stone in a sandwich bag. They sat at the kitchen table and pressed their halves flat, pits in the middle, the way Dad used to set them out for customers to smell. Bea said the stone had gone a funny colour. Nell said it was only ripening. Neither of them mentioned that they had both, at the same moment, looked down at their wrists.
