Matching shell tattoos on two forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two forearms are pressed side by side while the hands are clasped, each showing a small shell tattoo. The left shell is outlined in fine dark linework and filled in teal, and the right shell is a smaller lilac and pink design with delicate detail. The background is a close crop of black and white polka dot clothing, with the tattoos as the clear focus.

Their grandmother had told them that the sea kept a tally of everything it took, and that it would return a thing for every thing given back, but only if the two halves were carried together. So they walked up the shingle with the pail between them, the handle joined across their fingers, past the chapel and the ruined keep where the gulls nested in the arrow slits.
At the top of the cliff path the wind came round hard, and Ida let go to hold her hat. The pail tipped. Maud reached for it, and the two shells slid out and clattered across the flagstones of the old keep, one landing ridges up, one with its mouth open to the sky.
Ida said the sea would be cross. Maud said the sea had had its turn. They laughed until the gulls lifted off the walls, and in the morning the boat was lying on the sand below the castle, upright and dry, with nobody aboard. Grandmother only nodded at the window and said the tally was square.
