Liddy didn't need to read it. She had written the note herself at three in the morning, the night before the Greyhound left Halfmoon for Leeds, and she knew every loop of it. It said only that the swap was on: one of them would go, and the other would stay and keep the bench by the level crossing warm.
Mags laughed, which was what Liddy had hoped for. They had been fourteen when they settled on the wording, sitting on the wall outside the Co-op with a biro between them, pressing the letters into each other's skin until the ink smudged and they had to start again. Three letters each. Nothing fancy. Nobody in Halfmoon would know what it meant except the two of them, and that was the point.
Liddy's bus came at quarter past six. Mags walked her to the stop without speaking, and when the doors folded open she caught Liddy's hand and held it up against her own, fingers curled over the thin black marks, until the driver leaned on the horn.
The letter arrived in March, folded round a postcard of the Leeds Corn Exchange. Mags had written on the back in the same biro: still warm, still there.
