Matching big and lil sister heart tattoos

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are placed side by side, each carrying a heart outline with the word sister written in flowing script across it. The left arm reads lil above the word and the right arm reads big, so the pair reads as a matching set. The linework is fine and even, the photograph is in black and grey, and the dark background keeps the focus on the skin.

Sit down, you're blocking the queue for the lorries, but sit anyway. I'll tell it while the guard finds his stamp. My grandmother told it to me at this same bridge, and she had it from a woman who sold thread at the market on the far side.

There were two sisters in Halvan, one born in the spring of the flood year and one in the autumn after. The elder was Mira and the younger Dorota, and their mother, who had no patience for ceremony, wrote on the kitchen wall in charcoal, BIG and LIL, so the midwife would not mix them up when she came to count the boots. The charcoal was scrubbed off within a month. The names were not.

When the soldiers drew the new line through the valley, Dorota was on the wrong side of the river with a goat and a cousin, and Mira was on the right side with the bread. For eleven winters they threw things across. Mira sent knitted cuffs tied to a stone. Dorota sent back a strip of red ribbon cut from her good dress, folded into a heart with a long tail. Mira unfolded it and read the shape as a letter, because that was what it was. Then the old tailor across the water, who did lettering for wedding cards, sent a cloth with a heart on it and the word sister running through the middle in a hand that trailed off like smoke.

So when they finally met at this gate, neither could remember the other's face, only the cuffs and the ribbon. Mira held out her arm. Dorota held out hers. They pressed their wrists together over the barrier and laughed at how alike the marks were, though one had been written by a child and one by a tailor's tired hand.

Now go on, the guard is waving. Cross with your hands where he can see them, and mind the step.
