Three matching small outline hearts on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three hands are raised and touching, showing the inner wrists of each arm. Each wrist has a small, thin black outline of a heart, drawn with even single-line linework and no shading. The tattoos are identical in size and sit at similar positions, set against a pale, softly lit background with wooden flooring.

The stencil printer in Hangar Nine coughs out its last sheet at three in the morning, the hour when the station's ring has turned you out of daylight entirely. Marisol tears it along the perforation and hands you one heart, then Ilse takes another, and the third goes to you. 'Same size,' Marisol says. 'Don't argue with the machine.'

You press the stencils to the inside of your wrists under the work lamp, the three of you bent over the bench like surgeons who have forgotten why they trained. The needle-gun is older than all of you put together. Its hum fills the hangar while Ilse counts the lines out loud, one, two, three, and each heart closes on the same breath. Nobody cries. Ilse says the ink will outlast the contract, and Marisol says that is the only kind of promise worth making out here.

Six months later the relay fails over the shadow side of the moon, and ground control goes silent for eleven hours. You are the one who holds the hand-lamp up to the cracked viewport. The other two come to stand either side of you, and their hands lift to the glass the way they always do, three inner wrists in a row catching the light. The hearts are small and plain, and in the glare they look like someone else's handwriting.

When the signal returns, Ilse laughs first and says the sensors would never believe three grown women were that sentimental. You say nothing. You simply lift your arm again, slowly, and the others follow, a short line of hearts turned towards Earth, with no one's name written inside any of them.
