Matching Sisters script tattoos on wrists
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are held together, each showing the word Sisters in flowing script inside a looping banner outline. The left tattoo is black ink with fine, even linework and light grey shading in the lettering, while the right is a pale white ink design that shows as a faint, slightly raised outline against the skin. The plain, dimly lit background keeps the focus on the two wrists and the matching designs.

The ink-seller of Hollin Ford kept two pots on his shelf, one of soot and one of chalk. Only the soot was for sale. When the miller's twin daughters came in the week before the spring flood, Agda, the elder, asked for the black, and her sister Wenna, who had never once in her life asked for anything, pointed at the white and would not stop pointing.

The old man sighed and said the white would only show when the skin was warm and the light came from the side. Wenna said that suited her fine. He wrote the word SISTERS in a looping banner on a strip of birch bark, then pricked it onto each of their wrists with a bone needle, the black on Agda and the pale on Wenna, so that anyone holding their hands together would see both at once.
Agda went down the river that autumn to marry a boatman from the salt coast, and the floods came early. For three winters the girls sent word to each other by the ferry, and every letter ended with the same word in soot. Wenna sent nothing back but a leaf pressed flat, and the leaf was always pale at the edges, as though it had been dipped in chalk.
In the fourth spring Agda came up the road with her hands wrapped in her shawl and held out her arm. The black had faded to the grey of wet slate, but the pale word had kept its shape. Wenna laid her own arm beside it, and the two words lay together in the lamplight, one dark and one barely there, until the lamp guttered and neither of them could tell which was which.
