Matching rose and sister script tattoos on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms show matching tattoos of a pink rose and a smaller red rose with grey shaded leaves, with the word Sister in black flowing script beside them. The roses use solid colour with soft grey shading, while the lettering is a fine, even black outline. The tattoos sit side by side on a dark background, with the two arms filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Our mum never could tell a climber from a rambler, so when she planted the two bushes against the back wall of the Ashworth Road house, she simply named them after us. Mags got the pink one, because she cried whenever the frost caught it, and I got the red, which was the stronger of the two and therefore, according to Mum, mine to look after.

The summer we were fourteen we had the row that lasted until the leaves came down. It was about a bicycle, or a boy from the chip shop, or whose turn it was to sit in the front of the car to Skegness. I remember standing at that wall with the secateurs in my fist, snipping every bud off the red bush so there would be nothing left for her to admire.

Mum said nothing. She took a cutting from the pink, stood it in a jam jar of rainwater, and left it on the kitchen windowsill where we would both have to look at it every morning. By October it had grown two pale roots like fine thread. Mags carried the jar down the garden without a word and pushed the cutting into the soil beside the red, and the next spring a shoot came up between them, neither pink nor red, just a tight bud with both colours still arguing over it.

I still have the leaves she pressed in the back of the big atlas, grey-green and stiff as card. When she died, we found pencilled on the inside cover: one root, two sisters, do not cut the wall.
