Two side-by-side photos of a black and grey fine line infinity symbol tattoo with a feather, reading big sister on one foot and little sister on the other.

Infinity feather sister tattoos on feet

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show a matching pair of tattoos: a feather whose quill loops into an infinity symbol, with the words big sister on the left foot and little sister on the right. The linework is fine and even, with soft grey shading along the feather barbs. The ink is entirely black and grey, and each image is framed close on the top of the foot.

Dear Wren,

The jay feather came down onto the path at the edge of Holloway Wood the morning after the flood, right where the stile meets the lane. I knew it was yours before I picked it up. You always left things where the sky could find them. Mum says the bird was probably moulting, but I like to think it was passing a message along the hedge to whoever was still awake in the village.

I did what you asked in the spring and walked the old drove road down to the mill pond, counting the gateposts the way Dad taught us. Eleven gates, one broken, and at the twelfth the water had gone brown and high. Someone had tied a ribbon to the alder, faded to the colour of weak tea, and beneath it lay a child's shoe, sodden, laces still knotted. I didn't touch it. I tucked the feather under the ribbon so whoever comes next finds two things instead of one.

The reason I'm writing is the ferry. Mr Abbott says the crossing will stay shut until the autumn, so the bus is the only way out now, and the bus only runs when the road is dry. Come home by the first of the month if you can. I'll keep the lamp in the front window the way we did the winter the lights failed.

Turn the feather over when you read this. The quill is still good. I'll wait at the stile, and we'll walk the whole loop the wrong way round, the way we used to, so the wood has to look at us properly.

Love, Lyddie
