A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind came through the arrow slits of Greywell Castle at dusk, and it always brought a feather with it. Maud, the elder of the miller's two girls, had been gathering them from the nettles since the spring her sister Wenna walked off up the drove road behind the cattle. She kept them in a biscuit tin under the flour sacks, grey ones mostly, a few striped brown, each one curled a little to the left as if it had been turning to look back.

Wenna had promised to be home before the hay was in. The hay was in twice now. Maud stopped counting the nights by the bells at Saltcote and counted them by the feathers instead, which seemed fairer to the birds. On the fortieth evening she climbed the broken stair of the keep with a candle, past the room where the old lord's wife had once sat sewing, up to the last window where the stone had gone soft and green.

A grey feather lay on the sill, pinned under a stone. It was longer than the rest and its shaft had been bound with red thread, the same red Maud had tied onto Wenna's bundle the morning she left. Beneath the feather someone had scratched two words into the mortar, one running up the wall and one running down, joined by a loop that closed back on itself like a road that never ended.

Maud did not weep. She took out her knife, cut a strip from her apron, and tied her own feather beside the other. Then she wrote on the sill with the candle stub, big sister, and waited for the wind. It came up the valley just after the bells, lifted both feathers at once, and carried them out over the marsh towards the hills, where something small and grey turned in the dusk and came back.
