Matching blue and red rose infinity tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each carrying a small rose on an infinity-shaped stem, one in blue and one in red. The linework is fine and delicate, with soft shading on the petals and small green leaves along the stem. The blurred background keeps focus on the two tattoos, which mirror each other in size and placement.

Dear Ruth, The blue rose in the back bed still won't open, so I've been tying its stem to the trellis the way Dad used to tie everything that wanted to wander. Mum's cutting went into the ground the spring you left, and I thought you'd want to know it took. It has three leaves now and a thorn that caught my glove this morning, which Mum would have called a good sign.

Nan's rule was that a rose only grows true if its cutting is bent into a loop before planting, so the stem remembers the shape it was given. She bent ours into that lazy figure of eight she used to doodle on the back of seed packets, and she swore the loop would hold the sap in and keep the bush from sulking. I laughed at her then. I'm not laughing now, mostly because the loop has held even through the frost we had in April, and the leaves along it are a darker green than anything else in the bed.

The red one you took to Leeds is flowering, according to the photo Kieran sent me of it on a windowsill, though I'm not sure how he got into your flat to take it. I'd rather you told me yourself. Write back and say whether the light there is as thin as you said, and whether the pot is still the chipped blue one from the market.

I'm putting the blue rose where the sun reaches it at four, and I've left a gap beside it for the red one when you're ready to send it home. We'll see which of us was right about the soil. Mind the thorns on the loop, they're the only part that doesn't bend. Love, Jo
