Three matching tattoos of pink poppies with grey leaves and the word sister in script, on legs.

Matching pink poppy and sister script tattoos

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

Three photographed tattoos show a pink poppy-style flower on a thin stem, with a grey shaded leaf beside the stem and the word sister written in fine script below. The petals use soft pink shading that fades toward the edges, while the stems, leaves and lettering are in black and grey linework. The three matching designs sit on separate limbs and are framed with skin and dark fabric at the edges of the shot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The poppies came up from Kent in the back of a Transit that smelled of diesel and wet cardboard, and by three in the morning they were the only pink thing in the whole of Tollgate Market. I stacked the buckets by the cold room door while the lorries reversed into the yard, beeping, their reversing lights smeared across the tarmac like spilt paint.

Jo came in at half past three, which wasn't unusual, and asked for four stems with the heads still closed. 'They open by morning,' she said. 'Wrap them in newspaper and they hold.' She had a biro tucked behind one ear and a crate-dust smudge on her coat. Her sister Bea waited outside under the sodium light, arms folded, pretending not to watch the van.

I wrapped the stems in the free paper's back pages because we had nothing better, and I wrote the word sister along the fold with a marker, the letters thin and leaning the way my dad's did on birthday cards. Jo read it and said nothing. She paid in coins, counted out to the penny, then pushed a pound back across the counter for the bin men.

When the sun came up behind the cranes, the heads outside the shop had loosened and turned toward the streetlight as it switched off. Bea had gone. Jo was still on the kerb, peeling back the top sheet, letting the first red petal drop onto the wet pavement.
